Egress
Egress is a code-required emergency escape route — typically a compliant exit door plus an emergency escape-and-rescue window in every sleeping room. It is a frequent trigger in garage and interior conversions, where existing openings often must be enlarged to meet the California building code before a room can be a legal, permitted bedroom.
Egress upgrades are a frequent hidden cost in conversions. A complete bid should account for any window enlargement or new exterior door needed to make a converted room legally habitable. In Sacramento-region garage and interior conversions this is one of the most common plan-check items: an existing garage opening or a small original bedroom window rarely meets the escape-and-rescue dimensions, so the wall has to be cut and a larger window or door installed before that room can be permitted as a bedroom. Catching the egress requirement early matters because it is reviewed against the objective building-code standard in the same ministerial check, and missing it can send an otherwise complete conversion set back for correction.
